Book Diary: The Maytrees (Annie Dillard)

THE MAYTREES, Annie Dillard

(finished reading on 07/12/2009)

Phil loaned me this book.  I respected it, but didn’t entirely enjoy it.  The theme of love and its many facets is always a good theme, but the setting and the characters were very alien to me, perhaps because their age, status and location were unfamiliar, or perhaps they weren’t believable…?  Either way, I didn’t care about them at all.  The language was almost Nabokovian, but again whilst I was impressed at points and respected Dillard as a ‘wordsmith’, I wasn’t moved or thrilled.  Saying all that, I thought at twenty pages in I wouldn’t finish it and the next thing I knew I had, so it obviously had something.
